So now I am replacing some old Optimus Pro 77 Bookshelf speakers that I had for surrounds. Yes they were cheap and not very good sounding speakers. So I was wondering if these JBLs would be good for surround speakers. I have a pair of floor standing JBL 240Ti speakers for the fronts and an Infinity Primus Series PC250 for the center. They are being driven by a Yamaha 500 Watt AVR. And all connected by 12 gauge Monster Cable.

The mounting height of 1.5 feet above ear level is about right. Just keep in mind, that ideally, if this is a 5.1 setup, the surrounds should be to the sides of the listening position, maybe just a little bit behind . JBL covers this surround sound system with a five-year warranty.

Monster has no advantage over much cheaper cable from Monoprice.com or even Home Depot and Lowes. There's no need to replace it , just no need to waste money on it. I received the JBL 240Tis from a friend who upgraded to some B&W speakers. And the Primus I bought that at a yard sale for $20.

The Infinity Primus center is pretty recent . The matching mains would be the Primus 250s, but they might be hard to locate. Of the currently available products, the Primus 253s are probably your best bet. Horn tweeters have a rather distinct sound to them. Hopefully it won't be much of a distraction - again, since these are for surround speakers, it's less crucial.

I have tested the system out by watching The Meg, several Game of Thrones episodes, some Christmas movies and even streaming music through it. Those JBL 240s are pretty old, and it's pretty likely there IS NO matching center for them. Your best bet will be to consider updating them.

So would they be good for surrounds and if so how high should I mount them above ear level. I had my Optimus speakers about a foot and a half above ear level. The one place where the JBL home theater system didn't excel was surround sound. Even though there were speakers surrounding our listening panel, most of the reviewers felt as if the front-left and front-right speakers were doing all of the work. There is a scene our reviewers watched where motorcycles surround the main character in the movie.

I bought the Monster Cable from a Audio Video shop that was going out of business. I should be upgrading the entire system in a couple of years. In terms of overall treble response and dialogue clarity, only our top home theater speaker system ranks higher. People sell their speakers and have no idea what they have. But anyway I do understand more about this. For your fronts, however, it's a different story. Here it is MUCH more important that your mains and center match each other - that usually means they come from the same manufacturer and the same product line. This helps ensure a uniform front soundstage - especially for panning effects and to make sure dialog is well balanced with the mains.

JBL is quick to answer any questions you have via both email and phone. The subwoofer's performance was also impressive. At 60-watts, the subwoofer isn't nearly as powerful as the one in the Polk Audiopackage, but it pairs well with the rest of the system. The bass was prominent and still had plenty of volume to go before maxing out. The subwoofer was low, punchy and powerful.
